Garden Rescue star hits back after receiving hateful comments about ‘inappropriate’ top

Garden Rescue star Lee Burkhill has hit back at ‘outraged’ viewers who sent him ‘hateful’ comments over a vest he wore on the BBC show, which airs at 3.45pm on weekdays

Garden Rescue star Lee Burkhill has accused viewers of homophobia after a ‘provocative’ vest he wore on the programme caused ‘outrage’.

The award-winning garden designer, who is known as the Garden Ninja, is appearing on the new series of the BBC show, which airs at 3.45pm, all week alongside Ground Force legend Charlie Dimmock. But the 40-year-old said he had received hateful emails and comments on social media after wearing a slashed open sleeve vest on the latest episode of the garden makeover programme.

Dubbing it ‘vest gate’, Lee took to Instagram to share some of the abuse and told his 20,000 followers: “Who knew a vest could become so controversial! Seems like there’s a few outraged viewers that I dare… dare to wear a vest!!! Scandalous. Disgraceful. Provocative!!!

“Whether it’s those lovely hateful emails or just people having a rant on Twitter. Let’s have a look at why the humble vest may be causing such a drama! I’ve been having a think because… The Landscapers can wear vests? Female identifying presenters can wear vests? But I’m somehow inappropriate?”
