G20 softening of language on Russia ‘nothing to be proud of’, says Ukraine

Consensus declaration refers to ‘war in Ukraine’ rather than ‘war against Ukraine’ and fails to condemn Russia as aggressor

The G20 joint declaration that stopped short of condemning Russia’s war was “nothing to be proud of”, Ukraine said on Saturday.

The G20 adopted a consensus declaration that softened its language on Russia, referring to the “war in Ukraine” rather than the “war against Ukraine”, and called on all states to refrain from the use of force to seize territory.

The leaders’ declaration from the New Delhi summit failed to condemn Russia as the aggressor.

Paragraphs referencing the war called for increased grain supplies from Russia and Ukraine, a major concern of lower-income countries, and the “inadmissible” threat of nuclear weapons, rather than blaming Russia for the war.
