Fury as £1million taxpayer-funded car park used by just three cars in first week

The new car park at Manea station in Cambridgeshire opened last week after a lengthy delay, but has been used sparingly with reports suggesting only three cars have parked there so far

A multi-million pound car park has drawn scorn from locals after only three cars paid to use it during its first week of opening.

The area was built at Manea station, near Ely in Cambridgeshire, to cater for rail passengers and finally opened to the public more than a year late, owing to issues with CCTV.

Built on land north of the station, it provides a cycle shelter, CCTV, low-energy lighting, and improved drainage infrastructure with plans for bird and bat nest boxes to be installed.

However, furious residents have accused the local council of wasting taxpayers’ money after only a handful of vehicles used the 112 capacity car park since it was officially opened last week. Aerial photos showed just one vehicle parked in the massive car park at Manea station, three days after it opened.
