Fran Kirby: I want to win World Cup – so Dad gets the garage done

Exclusive interview: European Championship winner already focussed on next year’s World Cup

When you’ve won as many trophies and medals as Fran Kirby, inevitably you eventually run out of room to display them all. Thankfully, her Dad has offered a solution, but with the Chelsea and England star aiming to add Champions League and World Cup winners medals to her growing collection, he might have to get a move on.

“My dad has said he’s going to do up the garage and have all my trophies in there, so I can give them to him to display them – but that means he has to actually get the garage done,” chuckles Kirby, in a tone that will be familiar to anybody with a loved one who has promised to eventually get around to doing a particular DIY job at some point.

The 29-year-old ambitions, though, are serious, as she is determined to keep adding to list of achievements that already includes five Women’s Super League titles, four FA Cups, two League Cups, two PFA player of the year awards, two FWA player of the year awards and – after July’s glory at Wembley – a European Championship winners medal.

Kirby says she hasn’t let that Euros triumph change her or allowed herself to “get too wrapped up in it all” after the Lionesses’ success because, as she explains simply: “I still have things that I want to achieve, trophies that I want to win. It was an incredible summer to be a part of, but I like to move on quite quickly in football terms. I want the next trophy that’s available and the next trophy after that.”
