Former England all-rounder in line for national selector role

There is no desperate urgency to appoint a selector, with England’s squads for their most important assignments this winter selected

The former England all-rounder Luke Wright is in the frame to become the new national selector following the withdrawal of Alec Stewart.

Stewart confirmed on Wednesday that he will remain with Surrey, where he just masterminded a second Championship title in four years, and appointed a coaching staff headed up by Gareth Batty.

He had been considered the preferred candidate for the role, but a combination of personal reasons and a commitment to Surrey have seen him withdraw before the final interview stage. Stewart had previously ruled himself out of the running for other senior England roles, including head coach and director of cricket.

That has brought Wright, one of a handful of remaining candidates, into the frame. Steve Harmison, the former England bowler, is among those through to the second round of interviews, while it is understood that Mark Alleyne, who coaches Gloucestershire and Welsh Fire, was interviewed but not awarded the job.
