Football’s independent regulator to act separately from FA

The new independent football regulator will be a stand-alone body separate from the FA, the government has said.

The FA had argued for the regulator to be part of the governing body, as had the Premier League, but ministers have outlined plans that would mean it is totally separate from any organisation already connected to the game, “to make sure it is operationally independent from the game and can adequately protect clubs’ and fans’ interests”, a government statement said.

A commitment for legislation for the regulator is now expected to be included in the King’s Speech in November with it becoming law next year.
