Football fan stabbed to death after violent clash ahead of Champions League match

Fans of Dinamo Zagreb and AEK Athens were involved in a violent clash ahead of their Champions League qualifying game, with UEFA issuing a statement deploring the ‘appalling incidents’

UEFA have postponed a Champions League match after a Greek football fan died after being stabbed during a violent clash between supporters in Athens.

Police said the man was stabbed multiple times as fans of AEK Athens and Dinamo Zagreb fought ahead of their Champions League qualifying match. Eight others were injured during the violence and 98 people were arrested.

“A serious incident took place outside the Nea Filadelfeia stadium,” Greek police said. “A young Greek man was stabbed to death and six other injured people are in hospital.” Reuters state that violence broke out after more than 100 Dinamo Zagreb fans showed up near AEK’s stadium where a number of home supporters had already gathered, with flares, stones and makeshift explosives being thrown by both groups.

The clashes took place over an hour after Zagreb had completed a training session and left the stadium. An eyewitness who owns a nearby shop told Greek newspaper Proto Thema : “About 10 pm, I had the shop half full and someone came and alerted me.
