Food safety experts reveal the four popular grocery items they would never eat from the store

Supermarkets follow strict guidelines from the Food and Drug Administration to ensure food is sourced, packaged, stored and correctly handled to prevent bacteria and other infections

Food safety experts have revealed the four popular grocery items they would never eat from the store as it’s “just not worth the risk.”

Kali Kniel, a microbiologist at the University of Delaware, and Dr. Bryan Quoc Le, a Washington-based food chemist and industry consultant said all supermarkets have to enforce Food and Drug Administration guidelines which make sure food is sourced, packaged, stored, and dealt with across the country. Experts are tasked with making sure shoppers can do their weekly grocery shop with ease and not worry about potential salmonella and E.coli breakouts.

However, there are some items that shoppers can purchase at the supermarket, which the biologists would avoid, and have recommended against buying. This is due to the risk of bacteria spreading on certain foods, along with storing hot food in conditions where bacteria can thrive. Interestingly, pre-packed food is just one of the items that experts have warned against. They said it’s essential people wash their fruit before consumption as they can contain nasty bacteria.

Professor Kniel and Dr Lee told HuffPost it is recommended fruit is thoroughly washed before eating. And when storing in the fridge, consuming the products within a few days of purchase. This is to help prevent the spread of any unwanted bacteria which can make you sick.
