 A jury in Florida awarded a girl $800,000 in damages after she received third-degree burns from a McDonalds chicken nugget. The court ordered the payout after a lawsuit brought by the family of Olivia Caraballo, an eight-year-old who was injured by the hot McNugget in 2019. The sum is much smaller than the $15million payout Caraballo's lawyers were seeking, but also higher than the $156,000 sum the fast food giant asked the jury to award. 'I'm actually just happy that they listened to Olivia's voice and the jury was able to decide a fair judgment,' her mother Philana Holmes said. 'I'm happy with that. I honestly had no expectations, so this is more than fair for me.' As Holmes drove away from the checkout window, she heard her daughter, then four-years-old, begin screaming in pain. Caraballo had dropped a hot chicken nugget on her lap, where it became stuck between her thigh and her seatbelt. Holmes quickly pulled over into a nearby parking lot, where she began recording video and audio of the incident. At trial, Holmes testified that the workers at the Tamarac McDonald's did not warn her that the food was hotter than usual. Her lawyers also played the videos and audio recordings she took on the day of the incident. Attorneys for McDonalds did not dispute that the burn was caused by the hot nugget.
