Five people have been rushed to hospital after a car ploughed into a group of pedestrians in a Cornish village last night.

Emergency services raced to the collision near a primary school in Tintagel at around 11.50pm to find five people injured on the pavement. The scene was attended by an air ambulance, as well as a local fire and rescue crew.

All of the pedestrians were taken to Derriford Hospital with “varying levels of injury”, said Devon and Cornwall Police, none of which are believed to be life-threatening. The driver of the Mazda MX-5 – a 22-year-old man – was left uninjured.

He has since been arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through drink or drugs, and remains in police custody. The force said in a statement: “Officers are investigating a collision in Tintagel which left five people injured.
