Fine weather is not such good news for the rest of the month

After much disappointing weather over the school holidays, it seems like September is trying to make up for it with a late heatwave. The temperature reached 30.2C at Whitechurch in Pembrokeshire on Monday, and is still rising this week. This raises an intriguing prospect – will September record the highest temperature this year? The highest temperature so far was 32.2C in June, and it is just within the realms of possibility that this could be beaten this week. It would be extraordinary to record the hottest day of the year in September, but it has happened before.

Seven years ago a high of 34.4C was recorded at Gravesend in Kent on September 13, which was the highest temperature for the whole of 2016.
