Ferrari hail ‘legend’ Forghieri after world title-winning designer dies,aged 87

Mauro Forghieri, who spent 27 years working with Ferrari and oversaw a string of F1 world championship victories as technical director, has passed away the team have announced

Former Ferrari designer and technical director Mauro Forghieri has died at the age of 87.

Forghieri helped Ferrari win four F1 drivers’ championships and seven constructors’ championship during a 27-year stint with the team. He joined Ferrari straight from university as a trainee, before being appointed technical director by founder Enzo Ferrari.

He held the position until 1984 and famously designed Ferrari’s 312T car, which Niki Lauda and Jody Scheckter both won world championships in.

“Legends last forever,” Ferrari wrote in a tribute on social media. “Remembering Mauro Forghieri. 1935 – 2022. It’s been an honour making history together. Ferrari and the world of motorsport will never forget you.”
