Fears Gibraltar could be cut off from mainland after Spanish elections

Conservatives predicted to return to power likely to take hard line on border crossings, particularly if they rely on far-Right support

Gibraltar’s government is bracing itself for the outcome of Spain’s upcoming election, amid fears the country’s next prime minister could cut the territory off from the mainland.

With the vote on July 23 widely expected to usher in a new Right-wing government, there are concerns Madrid will take a hard line on claiming sovereignty over the Rock and could shut its narrow isthmus land border if relations worsen.

The result of the vote could also jeopardise a long-awaited post-Brexit deal creating a common travel area between Spain and Gibraltar, in which new arrangements had to be found to facilitate the crossing of up to 15,000 Spain-based workers to the Rock each day.

Joseph Garcia, Gibraltar’s deputy chief minister, told The Telegraph that his government remained committed to negotiations for a deal guaranteeing easy movement of people across the border, but claimed there were “detailed plans in place” in case there was no negotiated outcome.
