 Liam Lawson will continue to deputise for Daniel Ricciardo until the Formula One star has fully recovered from hand surgery, AlphaTauri have confirmed. Ricciardo broke his left hand following a crash during practice for last weekend's Dutch Grand Prix, with rookie Lawson called-up to replace him. On Sunday, the Aussie underwent hand surgery which has since been confirmed to be successful but it remains to be seen how long he will be out of the cockpit for. Red Bull boss Christian Horner suggested that the 34-year-old could return for the Singapore Grand Prix on 17th September, though he believes that that could be risky given the gruelling nature of the Marina Bay street circuit. One thing is for certain: he will not be taking part in the next race in Italy this weekend, with AlphaTauri confirming on Monday that Lawson will be behind the wheel for as long as Ricciardo can't drive. 'We are delighted that Daniel's surgery went well and that he is now on the road to recovery,' a statement from the Italian team read on Monday. 'We hope to see him at the track again very soon, but until he is fully fit, we can confirm that Liam, who did a good job in difficult circumstances in Zandvoort, will continue to drive alongside Yuki [Tsunoda], starting from our home race this weekend in Monza.' It's a big blow for Ricciardo, who only returned to F1 last month, replacing Nyck de Vries, and is currently 'auditioning' for a 2024 seat at AlphaTauri, with an eye on moving back to their senior team Red Bull for the following year. 'Hey everyone. Had surgery this morning, got my first bit of metal work so that's pretty cool,' he posted on Instagram following surgery. 'Big thanks to everyone who reached out and kept my spirits up. This ain't a setback, just all part of the comeback.'
