 Formula One CEO Stefano Domenicali believes teams should receive 'sporting penalties' if they are found to have breached the budget cap. His comments come as the FIA prepare to release their report on teams' financial submissions from the 2022 season at the end of July. There are rumours, courtesy of the Italian branch of Motorsport.com, that three teams on the grid have failed to comply with the regulations – as was the case last year. Aston Martin and Williams committed a procedural breach when submitting their finances for the 2021 season and were given small fines as a result. But more pressingly Red Bull were found guilty of a 'Minor Overspend breach' and subsequently fined $7million (£6m) and handed a 10% reduction in their wind tunnel time. Though Red Bull boss Christian Horner labelled the punishment 'draconian' at the time, many felt it did not go far enough, especially in light of how little affect it has had on the reigning champions for the 2023 season. Red Bull have won all 10 races this season, Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez are 1-2 in the standings and they hold a 208 point lead over nearest rivals Mercedes going into this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix. And it is the latter that Domenicali wants to see the sport's governing body utilise, while the Italian also called for any decision on punishments to be made quickly to avoid the drawn out and arduous process seen last year. 'I would like the penalty to be sporting in case of infringement, it is something we asked for very clearly,' he told Autosport.
