A former Afghanistan TV anchor given sanctuary in the UK has revealed that her brothers were smuggled into Europe where they have rebuilt their lives away from the shadow of the Taliban.
Zahra Shaheer reflected on their journey after graduating from a charity programme giving refugees the skills they need to ‘thrive’ in British society.
She told of her two brothers being among those taking flight from her homeland and voiced her dismay at the scenes in Dover, where those arriving across the English Channel in small boats have been shown in cramped and makeshift conditions.
The single mother of two spoke amid an outcry about the asylum system which has been most visible with the overcrowded Manston immigration processing centre in Kent.
