Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has explained the decision to name Bruno Fernandes as the club’s new captain after taking the armband away from Harry Maguire
Erik ten Hag has hailed Bruno Fernandes as the perfect role model for his Manchester United teammates after handing the Portuguese midfielder the club captaincy on Thursday.
Fernandes donned the armband on a regular basis last season in the absence of Harry Maguire, who lost his place in the team during the early weeks of Ten Hag’s tenure. The England star confirmed last Sunday that he had been stripped of the captaincy in an emotional statement which was shared on social media.
Raphael Varane skippered United in their pre-season win over Lyon on Wednesday but Fernandes was fancied by most to succeed Maguire on a permanent basis.
And Ten Hag gave a glowing endorsement of Fernandes and his qualities in the immediate aftermath of the big announcement.
