Marcus Smith will be England’s “magician” from his new substitute full-back role at the World Cup, with England hoping he can fire up their struggling attack late in games.
During his six-year career, the 24-year-old has never started a game of professional rugby wearing No 15. However, in a last-minute tactical change, England have started using him as a replacement full back, to complement the fly half George Ford, while the captain Owen Farrell serving a ban.
England will continue that ploy against Argentina in their opening World Cup pool match on Saturday, with Freddie Steward starting at full back, but Smith primed to replace him in the second half.
