England to go without dressing-room camera for Autumn Internationals

Plus: the RFU takes the unprecedented step of printing names on the back of matchday squad jerseys

England will be one of the few teams without a dressing-room camera this autumn but Eddie Jones’ squad will have surnames on the backs of their shirts for the first time.

Ben Morel, the Six Nations chief executive, confirmed earlier this week that there would be cameras in “most” dressing rooms this autumn and, while it is understood that England will not be one of those sides, the Rugby Football Union has taken the unprecedented step of printing names on the back of the jerseys of all 23 players of Jones’ matchday squad.

Although names on the backs of jerseys is not a novel concept to Premiership viewers, no international side has played in name-embroidered shirts in a Test match since Wales in the mid-2000s, although England will not be the first to reestablish the trend. Scotland will join their Calcutta Cup rivals with named jerseys when they face Australia at Murrayfield on Saturday.

Ahead of matches against Argentina, Japan, New Zealand and South Africa, Ellis Genge, Jack Nowell and Marcus Smith all posed with the new shirts at the squad’s training camp in Jersey, where England were preparing for the four games.   Bill Sweeney, RFU Chief Executive Officer said: “We are delighted to be featuring player names on the back of England shirts for our men’s international Test matches this autumn.
