England sweat over Mark Wood’s fitness ahead of T20 World Cup semi-final

Dawid Malan looks set to miss the clash with India in Adelaide but may be fit for Sunday’s final should England qualify

Mark Wood is an injury concern for England ahead of the T20 World Cup semi-final against India, after pulling up stiff at training on Tuesday at the Adelaide Oval.

Wood is still expected to be fine to play on Thursday after enjoying a fine tournament but did not bowl in training on Tuesday, with England managing their prized fast bowler – the quickest on display this World Cup – carefully ahead of the clash with India.

If Wood were not deemed fit, it would leave a major hole in the side. He has taken 12 wickets at 11.8 since England arrived in Australia last month, averaging a wicket every nine balls. There is no like-for-like replacement in the England squad but Tymal Mills, the second quickest bowler in the squad, would likely be the one drafted in.

Dawid Malan is making progress in his recovery from a tweaked left groin. While Malan is still a doubt for the semi-final, with Phil Salt the likeliest candidate to replace him, his prospects of being deemed fit to play have improved. His chances of being fit for Sunday’s final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, should England make it, are growing markedly.
