Tom Curry was sent off for England during their opening pool match against Argentina on Saturday, having initially been sin-binned before his punishment was upgraded to a red card thanks to a new law
England suffered their first-ever red card in a Rugby world Cup after flanker Tom Curry was sent off for a high tackle on Argentina’s Juan Cruz Mallia in their heated opening pool match.
The incident happened after just two minutes and 59 seconds in Marseille, with Curry initially shown a yellow card before it was upgraded to a red thanks to a new law. In August, World Rugby confirmed that Foul Play Review Bunker would be introduced for the tournament in France.
The system is designed to aid the flow of the game, allowing officials to make swift decisions with less time spent checking replays while the action is paused. That was exactly with what happened with Curry, but there was controversy after Argentina had their own player sin-binned, but his yellow card stayed the same colour and Santiago Carreras remarkably remained on the pitch.
There was much debated surrounding the two decisions, with former England scrum-half Matt Dawson declaring on BBC Radio 5 Live: “He [Tom Curry] is like a caged animal. It is a common theme the ill-discipline of England. They get in such a good position and they mean well but the presence of mind and the the split-decision thinking is missing.”
