England stars’ ages at next Women’s World Cup give Lionesses reason for optimism

Sarina Wiegman’s England side came up just short in this year’s Women’s World Cup Final but many of the squad could feature again at the 2027 edition of the tournament

England’s World Cup dream came to a heartbreaking end on Sunday as the Lionesses were pipped to the trophy by Spain.

Sarina Wiegman’s side had been hoping to bring home the country’s first senior World Cup since 1966, but they were second best in the crunch clash at Stadium Australia. Spain captain Olga Carmona scored the winner for La Roja, while England goalkeeper Mary Earps made a superb penalty save to deny Jenni Hermoso in the second half.

However, one of the biggest strengths of this England squad is that time is on their side. Many of the Lionesses are yet to reach the peak of their powers and will likely still be eligible to represent their country for many years to come.

England will participate in the inaugural Women’s Nation’s League in Setptember, with the 2024 Olympics and Women’s EURO 2025 just around the corner. And, while we still don’t know where the next Women’s World Cup will be held, most of the current squad could be involved in the showpiece tournament.
