James Rew’s sparkling season for Somerset could end with an England call-up, while Surrey’s 95mph bowler Gus Atkinson is also in consideration for next month’s limited-overs series.
Rew, 19, is the leading runscorer in the County Championship this season and showed his white-ball skills with a century against Worcestershire in the One-Day Cup last weekend. Now he is in consideration for the one-day squad that takes on Ireland in a three-match series at the end of the September.
It is expected that England will not field a first-choice team for that series, because the World Cup squad will be flying to India to prepare for their opening match of the tournament against New Zealand on October 5, which presents a good opportunity for the selectors
