England have four prime alternatives with Reece James out of World Cup

England manager Gareth Southgate faces a dwindling crop of right-backs to choose from with the Qatar World Cup closing in. Chelsea ace Reece James, who was expected by many to start, has been ruled out through injury while Kyle Walker is also yet to return to action for Manchester City. In a position of particular depth for the Three Lions in recent years, Express Sport takes you through four prime candidates that Southgate could turn to…A longstanding favourite of Southgate’s, Trippier was the starting right-back for much of the 2018 World Cup and Euro 2020 as England powered to the semi-finals and final respectively. His position in the squad remained firm even while outside the Premier League, having spent two-and-a-half seasons with Atletico Madrid. Now with high-flying Newcastle United, Trippier has amassed 37 caps for his country and his free-kicks, defensive capabilities and stellar crossing could grant him a prominent role in Qatar. JUST IN: Newcastle ‘to make formal offer’ for exciting Argentine Maximo Perrone ‘in next few days’ Gareth Southgate has already informed Reece James that he won’t be going to the World Cup (Image: GETTY)The Arsenal star’s switch to right-back has caught many by surprise this campaign, particularly given that he acquitted himself well in the centre of defence last term. But William Saliba’s return to north London has forced Mikel Arteta’s hand and White has adapted superbly. Despite playing out of his skin for the Gunners, the 25-year-old was left out of Southgate’s latest England squad for the recent Nations League clashes against Italy and Germany. That surely won’t be the case when it comes to naming Southgate’s World Cup squad, however, meaning White should have the chance to add to his tally of four international caps. DON’T MISS…Liverpool ‘assessing Isaksen move’ as Lijnders makes ‘special’ claimEndrick’s stance on joining Chelsea, Real Madrid or PSGMan City boss Pep Guardiola sheds new light on Erling Haaland injury Trent Alexander-Arnold has endured tough spells with Liverpool this season (Image: Getty)An outside shout to be included in the right-back picture, Justin made his senior England bow earlier this year, playing one half of football against Hungary. That remains his only cap, although the timing of it could grant him some encouragement ahead of Southgate’s squad announcement. The 24-year-old rose through the ranks with Luton Town before heading to Leicester City in 2019. This season, he has been a regular under Brendan Rodgers with the Foxes now climbing the Premier League table after a dismal start.
