England close on World Cup last 16 with Denmark win despite huge blow

ENGLAND 1-0 DENMARK: Lauren James’ goal ensured England remain unbeaten at the World Cup and are on course for the last 16 – but the Lionesses were dealt another major injury blow

England made it two wins from two at the FIFA Women’s World Cup after edging out Denmark 1-0 despite losing Keira Walsh to an serious-looking injury.

The Lionesses led through a superb early strike from the recalled Lauren James in the fifth minute, but were dealt another cruel injury blow before the break. Walsh appeared to lose her balance overstretching for a pass and immediately called for the physio, with the England No.4 departing on the stretcher.

Despite the blow the European Champions retained control of the Group D contest, with Lucy Bronze going close with a back post header. Denmark’s best chances came before the Walsh injury, with Rikke Marie Madsen dragging a shot wide of Mary Earps’ goal when well placed.

Chloe Kelly nearly put the result beyond doubt with 20 minutes to play but failed to hit the target. And the Lionesses were nearly made to pay when Danish substitute Amalie Vangsgaard hit the post from only yards out.
