That said, he is playing an entirely different character this time around with Gavin not returning. With Bernice actress Samantha Giles reportedly leaving the show, some fans questioned if Gavin was coming back for her exit after the casting news. But the soap has confirmed while Robert is returning, Gavin is not - with him instead playing new villain Harry. Harry is set to leave the Dingles in grave peril with twists and turns ahead. Following the news, some fans could not hide their disappointment with many of them longing to have Gavin back in the village. Taking to Twitter, viewers begged Robert to turn out to be Gavin in a twist, as others confessed they'd hoped it was a return for the character. One viewer said: "So Gavin's back but he's not Gavin? Nice to see the lovely Robert Beck but I can't even begin to fathom the way in which @Emmerdale are messing with my emotions." Another fan said: "Good that your returning to Emmerdale. But I would have liked to have Gavin back instead. Imagine him checking into the B and B with his husband and children and seeing Bernice. Now that would be a scene."
