Eight-year-old girl ploughs through her mobile data

O2 were only too happy to send s fantastic response to little Macie Bullen-Jones when she contacted them in desperation

Everyone remembers the novelty of their first mobile phone. While yours may have been a chunky Nokia 3310 with space for just 10 text messages, smartphones these days are all-singing and all-dancing.

So you can imagine an eight-year-old’s sheer delight at getting one for Christmas. It’s perhaps no surprise, then, that young Macie Bullen-Jones ploughed through her data allowance less than a month after receiving her new phone. As is customary when this happens, Macie then got the dreaded text from O2 to alert her to the fact she’d been enthusiastic with her data use. What’s a girl to do in this situation? Macie could have waited it out for till her allowance refreshed. Or potentially have paid to top it up.

But instead she proved that if you don’t ask, you don’t get. Macie simply sent a text back asking for more, the Manchester Evening News reports. It was later spotted by her mum Claire, who realised she could maybe benefit from her daughter’s data binge. After initially asking the company if they could reply and tell her daughter to do some jobs to get her internet back, O2 went one step better. They sent Macie a letter telling her to crack on with some jobs around the house – along with some goodies including a fidget spinner, a Rubix cube, a power bank for her phone, some sweets, a light up yo-yo and a water bottle.

The letter, from O2’s social media team, said: “We got your text, but since you’re so famous now we wanted to write you a letter. “We’re not able to up your data allowance at the moment, our systems say you haven’t helped mum enough with jobs around the house. Unfortunately you’ll have to wait until we see better reports. Don’t be too sad though, we’ve sent a fidget spinner to keep you amused along with some other little #O2Surprises. We hope you like them.”
