 Eight nightclubbers were hospitalised this weekend after an unknown chemical substance left them gasping for breath. Witnesses said 50 to 60 people were inside Pop Works in Doncaster when it evacuated shortly before 5am on Sunday. A woman caught in the chaos said 'everyone' around her was coughing, sneezing and struggling to breathe. The cause of the incident is not yet known, although the club's managers appeared to claim the substance was let off by 'people' rather than a technical malfunction. Bouncers were said to have rushed to the dancefloor and shouted at patrons to leave, with door staff bringing them water while they waited for ambulances. None of the guests who were taken to hospital suffered 'lasting effects', police said. One said they did not end up needing any treatment besides being told to 'drink plenty of fluids', and were were told by doctors to come back their symptoms worsen. Patrons were brought water as they recovered on Doncaster's Silver Street Urging anyone with information to come forward, South Yorkshire Police said: 'We are carrying out an investigation into reports a chemical substance was let off inside a night-time venue in Doncaster city centre in the early hours of this morning (Sunday 30 July). 'We were called at 5am to reports a number of people said to be feeling unwell at Pop Works on Silver Street. 'Eight people at the venue required hospital treatment but nobody is thought to have had any lasting effects. We are now working to determine what substance was let off at the location.' Pop Works said in a statement: 'On the early hours of Sunday morning around 04:55am we had to evacuate everyone out of the club , this was a big eye opener for us as a business and it was handled very well thank you to our door staff and management.
