GameCentral gets to grips with EA’s rebranded FIFA 24 but is it only the name that’s different or do the changes run more deeply?
The biggest video games sports franchise in the world – EA Sports’ FIFA series – is dead. Long live EA Sports FC 24 – the game that would have been FIFA 24 if EA hadn’t announced last year that it was terminating the licensing agreement it had held with world football’s ultimate governing body since 1993.
It will take a while to get used to referring to the all-conquering football game as FC but on the evidence of EA Sports’ glitzy unveiling event in Amsterdam, the juggernaut should have no problem rolling on as impressively as ever, whatever the game might be called.
That’s because EA Sports has clearly used the split with FIFA (rumoured to be rancorous and not unconnected with outrageous financial demands from FIFA) to up its game considerably, seeing the change in branding as an opportunity to take a major leap forward in terms of current gen football sims.
FC 24 is due to be released on September 29 and will be the first football game (and as far as we can tell, the first game, full stop) to make use of volumetric motion capture. This allows EA to generate motion-captured animations of footballers performing signature moves merely using TV footage of them on the pitch, rather than forcing them to try to recreate those actions wearing motion-capture suits in specially equipped studios.
