 Drivers have been warned not to forget their next MOT, or you could get up to a £1,000 fine. An MOT test is an annual requirement for any car or vehicle older than three years – and must be done for the first time by the third anniversary of its registration. Essentially, MOTs test various parts of your car including the battery, brakes, windscreen, seatbelts, and exhaust system, among many other areas – though not the engine itself, gearbox, or clutch. Your vehicle will either 'pass' or 'fail' its MOT – and if you pass a certificate will be given to you, which is proof you've passed, and also lets you know when the next one is due. Getting caught driving without a valid MOT can bring fines of up to £1,000 – so it's not a date you want to forget. The reminder – which is free of charge and can be sent via text or email – will be sent one month in advance for car, van and motorcycle users. For those driving lorries, buses or 'large trailers', the MOT reminder will be sent two months in advance. Note the above information and text/email reminder service are applicable only to England, Scotland and Wales. People living in Northern Ireland do get MOT reminders, but theirs will arrive in the post seven weeks before the test is due. MOT tests are a bit different in Northern Ireland and may be required at different times – for example most cars and motorcycles require them after four years, not three.
