Dublin schools face huge teacher shortage ahead of new year

Schools face a desperate scramble for teachers with 264 positions still open in the capital weeks before the new term begins.

The housing shortage and the cost of living crisis are cited as the main reasons for the shortage. This weekend principals said they did not expect to fill many roles before September. One said she would have to use unqualified teachers for three special needs posts.

Last Friday, 264 Dublin teaching positions were unfilled on educationposts.ie, a recruitment website for all open positions in primary, post-primary, higher and further education. Of these, 134 were mainstream class teaching positions, 71 were for special education teachers and 25 for special class teachers. The remaining 34 were for language support teachers, supply teachers and general support teachers.
