Dublin car dealer to sue state for false IRA conviction

A Dublin car dealer who spent 15 months in a maximum security prison after he was wrongly convicted of IRA membership is preparing to sue the state.

The Court of Criminal Appeal has issued a miscarriage of justice certificate to Robert O’Leary, who was found guilty of IRA membership in 2020 after he was wrongly accused of supplying a Skoda Octavia that was used by the New IRA when it placed a bomb beneath a police officer’s car at Shandon Park golf club in Belfast in 2019.

The appeal court overturned the conviction after being told the state had not complied with its disclosure obligations. It emerged that Nik Kasapi, the chief prosecution witness, was a convicted drug dealer who was wanted in Montenegro in
