Drivers have been warned over a common mistake which could see them exposed to harmful bacteria in their car.
Most motorists have been guilty at some point of letting` junk pile up in their car, with water bottles usually found languishing at the bottom of a footwell or on empty seats. However, these bottles could actually pose a hidden harm to drivers.
Experts are warning that drinking from a bottle left in the car could expose the body to bacteria and bugs – with the problem worsened if the bottled liquid has been exposed to the sun or excess heat. Toxins found in a plastic bottle itself can also leak into the liquid slowly over time, studies found.
Scientists tested a fresh water bottle with results showing no harmful bacteria showed up. However, in the bottles of water that sat in the sun, they tested positive for chloroform – meaning it had the perfect conditions for E. coli to develop.
