Drivers may face £100million daily car tax fees under national ULEZ scheme

Motorists could be paying £100million per day on new car taxes if a London ULEZ scheme was rolled out across the entire country, according to experts. The Taxpayers Alliance claimed drivers would be contributing a substantial figure to local councils if every authority introduced similar £12,50 charges seen in London. Connor Holohan, campaign manager at the Taxpayers Alliance admitted road users would be ‘milked’ every day if schemes were adopted. He stressed low emissions zones were a money-grabbing opportunity with authorities seeing the potential of securing extra income, Sadiq Khan will expand London’s Ultra Low Emissions Zone to Greater London areas from August 29. It means those who use their cars every day will pay a whopping £87.50 per week or around £375 a month. Holohan told GB News : ‘We at the Taxpayers Alliance have taken the number of cars across England that couture to be non-ULEZ compliant under the current plans we see in London and extrapolated what would happen if you expanded ULEZ across the whole of England. ‘We found that with those £12.50 per day charges that would be £100million motorists would be milked for every single day.’ When pushed on whether the new eco-zones were a ‘cash grab’, Holohan replied: ‘It’s absolutely hugely about money. ‘That’s why you can see by these figures how tantilising it is for people who are in City Hall or town halls or Westminster to be raising money in this way.” The idea of a national ULEZ scheme is not currently on the cards but similar schemes have been touted across the country. The Taxpayers Alliance warns Birmingham, Manchester and Bristol are areas that are looking into expanding clean air zone legislation. Birmingham launched their £8 per day charge back in the summer of 2021 while Bristol currently has a £9 fee. Manchester shelved their Clean Air Zone plans before they launched after a U-turn from Mayor Andy Burnham. But, Holohan warned motorists may not be safe for too long as he stressed vehicle owners were under attack.
