Under Republicans, not another penny will go to Ukraine. Our country comes first." After first being elected in 2020, Ms Greene, 48, was sometimes referred to as the "QAnon candidate," and she was widely expected to be a fleeting, fringe political figure. Following extremist social media posts she was removed from her original positions on the House education and budget committees. When she compared mask mandates to the Holocaust, Kevin McCarthy, the Republican leader in the House called her comments "appalling". Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader in the Senate, said her views were a "cancer" for the party. However, in a sign of the shifting centre of gravity among Republicans in Congress, Mr McCarthy has increasingly brought her into the fold. Last month, he deliberately had Ms Greene seated directly behind him as he unveiled the party's policy agenda for the midterms at a high-profile event in Pennsylvania. He also asked her to join him on a trip to the Mexico border to highlight the illegal immigration crisis. Mr McCarthy will replace Nancy Pelosi as Speaker if, as widely expected, Republicans win the House on Nov 8.
