Donald Trump has been accused before of cheapening political discourse with scathing nicknames for his rivals and now seems to have gone even further by mockingly urging supporters not to call an opponent a “fat pig”.
In many ways Chris Christie, 60, the former governor of New Jersey and one-time Trump ally, will welcome the barb. Christie launched a long-shot campaign for the Republican presidential nomination in early June on an avowedly anti-Trump platform. Announcing his candidacy in Manchester, New Hampshire, Christie called Trump, 77, a “lonely, self-consumed, self-serving mirror hog” and blamed him for a succession of poor Republican results in national elections.
