During her time, she spearheaded an attempt to tighten sanctions against North Korea, cutting it off from gas and other essential goods. Months of hot rhetoric followed, culminating with an overture from Kim. Trump later reversed his course on the campaign to put pressure on Pyongyang. He met with the secretive leader in 2018 and 2019, attempting to repair relations between the two nations. In the end, Trump was unable to secure a deal on North Korea's nuclear weapons programmes before his departure from the White House. Even still, Trump has been known to occasionally heap praise on Kim Jong Un.
