 Former President Donald Trump has lost a bid for a new trial after being found liable for sexually abusing and defaming writer E Jean Carroll. US District Judge Lewis Kaplan said that Trump's lawyers failed to prove that the verdict of his civil trial in May was a 'seriously erroneous result.' Attorneys for the former president said that he plans to appeal the case again. In 2019, Carroll accused Trump of raping her in a changing room at Manhattan department store Bergdorf Goodman in the 1990s. Although the statute of limitations passed for Carroll to press criminal charges, she sued Trump under New York's Adult Survivors Law in 2022. A jury found Trump liable for sexual assault, battery, and defamation, but did not find him liable for rape.
