Donald Trump committed fraud to build property empire, judge rules

Donald Trump committed fraud for years while he amassed the business empire that made him a household name and paved his path to the White House, a New York judge has ruled.

Ruling in the civil case brought against the former president and his family firm by Letitia James, the state’s attorney-general, Justice Arthur Engoron found that Trump and his company had defrauded banks and insurers by lying about his net worth and vastly inflating the value of his assets.

The decision in the New York state court in Manhattan is a blow to Trump’s image as a successful real estate mogul turned politician and comes days before a trial in the case brought by James, which is set to begin on Monday.
