★★★★☆Spirits are always high on the opening night of a new Royal Ballet season. But how could they be otherwise when the performance kicking off the 2023-24 dance programme is Don Quixote? Petipa’s rollicking 19th-century rom-com is shot through with sunshine and smiles. The story, a tiny episode from the Cervantes novel, is slim – Kitri and Basilio want to marry, her father disapproves – but along the way to their inevitable happy ending we are treated to a cornucopia of gorgeous dancing and irresistible good cheer.
This staging by Carlos Acosta (first seen in 2013) brings a fresh and naturalistic spin to the Petipa heritage. He animates the stage with a vibrant bustle – townspeople, matadors, gypsies – and plays up the
