Dom Young: The making of England’s rugby league superstar

After a series of eye-catching performances, Young now has Papua New Guinea in his sights

England’s serene progress to a World Cup quarter-final has harvested three straight wins, 34 tries and a staggering 196 points, yet centre stage has belonged almost exclusively to Dom Young.

With his 6ft 7in frame, eye-catching dreadlocks and sensational eight-try haul, it is easy to see why. That Young, 21, was uncapped and largely unheard of on these shores until the tournament began makes his dramatic rise all the more remarkable.

The imposing winger from West Yorkshire came through the academy at Huddersfield Giants and made his Super League debut aged 17.

After just two first-team appearances, and opportunities limited, Young upped sticks to Australia to join NRL outfit Newcastle Knights on a three-year contract.
