He noted that many haulage and delivery firms pass on fuel costs to their customers, fuelling inflation. Diesel was last above 190p per litre in August as Russia's war on Ukraine triggered a rise in crude oil prices and pushed up refinery margins. Crude oil prices fell back but have climbed again since September as the Saudi-led Opec cartel reins in production. Diesel prices are under more pressure than petrol partly due to strong demand for diesel for back-up power generators amid concerns about shortages of natural gas this winter. Strikes at refineries in France have also added to the strains on global refining capacity. The AA said pump prices for both fuels should level off shortly, given wholesale prices. However, it warned higher costs had yet to hit some superstore forecourts but was likely to do so. It comes as official figures show that petrol consumption over the past three months is about 3pc below pre-Covid levels. The AA believes people are using the car less due to high pump prices. However, it added: 'Essential journeys, such as driving to work, the school run, shopping trips and visiting relatives, make it difficult for car owners to cut back on most fuel consumption.'
