The controversy in question is the latest 1.1.0 patch, which dropped about a week ago and is apparently so bad that the developers have pledged to never make another like it. For context, the 1.1.0 patch changed a lot, but what seems to have angered players the most are the various nerfs across popular character builds and changes to the reward system that people think makes the endgame even more of a sluggish grind. Naturally, players aren't happy to find their once strong characters have become weaker, prompting Diablo 4's user score on Metacritic to drastically drop across all platforms, to as low as 1.9. Over the weekend, game director Joe Shely, associate game director Joseph Piepiora, and associate director of community Adam Fletcher appeared in a livestream to address the complaints. Surprisingly, they were quite candid about the whole thing, acknowledging that the patch was meant to slow down players from quickly rushing through all the content, but it was also meant to make the game more fun. 'We know it is bad. We know it is not fun and it's something we ourselves know is not the greatest play experience for players out there' admits Fletcher, adding that they 'don't plan on doing a patch like this ever again.'
