Devastated widow awarded $2 million after wife dies of septic shock and bed sore

A court in Alabama rewarded a widowed man $2million after the family of a woman who died of septic shock and a bedsore sued Springhill Medical Center, reports say.

The family of a woman who died of septic shock and a bedsore won a case last week against the Springhill Medical Center in Alabama.

Jack Randy Loften filed the suit in 2020 following the death of his wife, Emma Catherine Loften, 68, two years prior. Catherine was treated at the hospital for 15 days in September 2018. She died in November 2018. Jack, along with the rest of Catherine’s family, believed this was a result of the medical center’s negligence. They believe Catherine could’ve lived if her ulcer had been treated in time.

The family’s attorneys, Allan Brown and Jim Dailey, told the court that the bed sore, or pressure ulcer, was acquired when Catherine spent 18 hours in the hospital’s ER being treated for pneumonia on September 8, 2018.

Catherine’s bed sore wasn’t discovered until she was transported to into the medical centre. During her stay, the attorneys said, new bed sores developed and at least one turned lethal when it became infected.
