Spiders: Expert advises on using essential oils as repellents Late August marks the start of spider mating season which means millions of homes could have an infestation waiting to happen, according to Online-Bedrooms.co.uk. Nic Shacklock from the company explained: ‘The mere thought of spiders entering millions of homes sends shivers down our spines. ‘Spider mating season comes into full swing at the end of August through to September which means many of us could be facing infestations. ‘No one wants spiders crawling around their homes so there are a few things you can do to keep them at bay. For example, spiders hate the smell of lavender and mint so it’s worth giving these scents a spritz around your home. ‘It’s also important to seal up any holes in the home they could potentially crawl through. Preventative measures like this are best for keeping these insects out.’ Deter spiders from your home with plants they ‘hate’ as expert warns of ‘infestations’ 1. Lavender According to the expert, spiders ‘can’t stand’ lavender and will want to be far away from the smell, meaning a lavender-scented home is ideal. Either use plants to deter the pests or lavender oil to spread the aroma around the whole of your home. 2. Mint Nic said: ‘Another scent which spiders can’t stand is the fresh smell of mint. Light a mint-scented candle to spread the aroma, or even add fresh mint to some of your meals as the distinct smell will deter them away.’ 3. Spray white vinegar A mixture of white vinegar and water isn’t just for cleaning, it is also a great way to ‘steer’ spiders away because they hate the smell.
