The under-fire Prime Minister, who faces huge pressure to tackle a mammoth asylum backlog and deliver on his pledge to stop the boats, was accused of debasing his office after claiming Labour sided with criminal gangs over immigration
Struggling Rishi Sunak has been branded “desperate and pathetic” after making a false claim that Labour has sided with “criminal gangs”.
The PM – who is under pressure to address a huge asylum backlog and deliver on his promise to stop the boats – came under fire over his clumsy attempt to deflect the blame to Labour.
He was accused of plumbing “a new depth” after claiming the opposition, who were last in power in 2010, were “propping up a system of exploitation that profits from getting people to the UK illegally”.
Labour’s shadow immigration minister Stephen Kinnock called it “desperate stuff from a desperate PM out of ideas”.
