Dementia prevention: Six easy ways to lower your risk as told by medical experts

There’s more than 944,000 people in the UK with dementia, and it’s estimated that by 2030 this will rise to more than 1 million – but there’s ways to cut your risk of the disease

Experts are warning of six easy ways to lower your risk of dementia.

There are more than 944,000 people in the UK who have dementia, according to the NHS. 1 in 11 people over the age of 65 have dementia in the UK and now the number of people with dementia is increasing because people are living longer.

It is estimated that by 2030, the number of people with dementia in the UK will be more than 1 million. The good news? Some dementia risk factors are modifiable, which means we can potentially reduce them.

Early diagnosis and treatment are also key, so if you are experiencing any possible signs or are concerned about a loved one, have a chat with your doctor. “As a population, if we all [did this], we can reduce the risk of dementia, or Alzheimer’s, by about a third,” says Dr Emer MacSweeney, CEO and consultant neuroradiologist at Re:Cognition Health (recognitionhealth.com).
