Deezer deal to net more royalties for pop artists

Universal Music Group, the world’s largest record label, has struck a deal with the audio streaming platform Deezer through which professional artists are set to receive more in royalties.

Musicians from Billie Eilish to Harry Styles stand to benefit from what Deezer hailed as “the most ambitious change to the economic model since the creation of music streaming”.

Under the new model, artists with more than 1,000 streams a month from at least 500 unique listeners will receive a greater slice of the returns. It will launch in France later this year before being introduced in further markets.
