Following the news, many paid tribute on social media, celebrating his decades-long career on the small screen. However, it was down to Twitter user Mike Beauvais to shed light on a part of McCallum's career that many had no idea about – his instrumental song, The Edge, was actually sampled in one of the greatest hip hop songs of all time. In fact, Dr Dre used a snippet in The Next Episode, alongside Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg and Kurupt, released in 1999. Taking to Twitter with a video of the original and the Dr Dre hit, Beauvais wrote: 'David McCallum was responsible for one of the most iconic samples in hip-hop history. RIP.' Fans were baffled by the news, heaping fresh praise on the late actor and musician in the comments and quote posts. One penned: 'Such an iconic piece of music. Keep waiting for Snoop to come in with the, 'La da dada dah.'' 'Absolutely blows my mind that the guy in charge of getting rid of the dirt in The Great Escape is basically responsible for one of the most iconic hip hop songs ever,' another agreed. A follower said: 'HOW DID I NOT KNOW DUCKY PERFORMED THE EDGE WTF.' 'I did not know this and my love for David McCallum just grew,' a Twitter user wrote.
