Date set for Donald Trump’s 2020 election trial

March 4 start date puts trial just a day before ‘Super Tuesday’, a potentially decisive point in 2024 presidential race

A judge has set March 4 as the date for Donald Trump’s trial on charges that he tried to overturn the results of the 2020 US presidential election.

The start date puts the trial just a day before “Super Tuesday”, a potentially decisive point in the 2024 presidential race, when more than a dozen US states hold their presidential primaries.

Judge Tanya Chutkan denied Mr Trump’s request to postpone the trial until 2026, instead placing one of the biggest criminal cases in US history in the peak of the 2024 campaign.

Mr Trump has pleaded not guilty to four charges, including conspiracy to defraud the United States, brought by special counsel Jack Smith. The charges relate to the US Capitol riot on Jan 6 2021 and other efforts to overturn the result of the last presidential election.
